In our latest content feature, we look at the people behind RDA Pilbara – their journeys to (and around) our region, what they love about the Pilbara and what they hope to achieve through our organisation’s advocacy.
We continue our series with RDA Pilbara Committee Member and General Manager of Dampier Ports & Marine Operations at Rio Tinto, Michelle Radley. Michelle’s long-time affinity for the Pilbara has culminated in a full-time move to the region and a deep appreciation for its people and communities.
When did your connection to the Pilbara start and how did the region end up becoming home for you?
My connection to the Pilbara began more than 18 years ago in the early days of my career at Rio Tinto. I didn’t live here yet, but through my early roles I supported work based in the Pilbara and frequently travelled to the region. A little over three years ago, I made the move to call the Pilbara home when I commenced my role as General Manager of Dampier Ports & Marine Operations – and it’s been one of the most rewarding decisions of my life.

What is your favourite thing about living and working in the Pilbara?
Without question, it’s the people. The Pilbara is shaped by passionate, resilient individuals who care deeply about its future. I love being part of a community that lifts each other up, challenges each other, and creates space for real conversations. There’s something powerful about living and working in a place where progress is driven by passion, collaboration, courage, and a genuine sense of belonging.
What’s one thing you’d like to improve about the Pilbara?
I’d love to see us continue building the Pilbara as a region where people choose to live – not just work. That means creating vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable communities where families thrive and opportunities endure beyond the life of industry. It’s about making sure the Pilbara isn’t just a destination for work, but a place people are proud to call home for generations.

What motivated you to join RDA Pilbara and what do you hope the organisation can contribute to the Pilbara?
For me, sustainable growth is about more than infrastructure – it’s about trust, relationships, and legacy. RDA Pilbara plays a vital role in shaping that legacy by fostering collaboration and ensuring growth benefits everyone. I hope we can create opportunities that strengthen communities, diversify our economy, and make the Pilbara a region where people feel connected and invested in its future.
Away from RDA Pilbara and your work, what does life look like and what do you enjoy doing?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband, our daughters, and friends, and making the most of the Pilbara’s unique lifestyle. Whether it’s appreciating the stunning landscapes, enjoying a quiet moment, or sharing a laugh with loved ones, I value the simple things that keep me grounded and recharged.
